Looking for additional math tutoring support in Algebra 1 or Algebra II? This just in from Nikhil Sierros:

My name is Nikhil. I am a junior in the Upper School at Williston and I recently started a math tutoring program called ASAP Math Tutoring. The program is intended to provide free math tutoring to algebra students in Williston and the local community who need assistance. In my own math class, I understand that learning can be more challenging without physically being in a classroom environment. Math is a cumulative subject that will carry on throughout our high school years and so, it is very important that we understand our current material in order to be prepared for next year’s math class. If anyone is interested in assistance with Algebra I or II, the link to my website is asapmathtutoring.weebly.com, where you can schedule an appointment time. I look forward to connecting with you!

Smile at the Supermarket :)

It is no secret to anyone who has a class with me that I work as a cashier at the Big Y in Northampton. Overall, it’s truly a swell first job. You get to meet lots of kids who go to different schools in the area, get to go behind the scenes and get a different perspective of a place you probably only visit for half an hour weekly, and get some of your own spending cash. Well, while all those things are still true, customers have become un poco loco in the midst of this pandemic!

Stress Baking

Yesterday I was working on the new Khan Academy assignments I had for Calculus, but after multiple attempts and not being able to complete them with a good score, I got stressed and went into TikTok where I found an easy recipe for Peanut Butter and Chocolate chip cookies, so since I had nothing else to do, why not give it a try? It looked simple.

Trust me I have never in my life baked before so this quarantine has got me trying new things to entertain myself, so it was actually pretty fun. Besides, I got to spend time with my mom by doing it so that’s good!

Daily Puzzles

Similar to everyone else in the world, our lives have been drastically changed from the recent events that have occurred in the past few weeks revolving around the pandemic. We have been forced to change our ways of life, encouraged to quarantine within our homes. As for myself, while boringly seated on my couch during such quarantine, for the last week or so, I’ve looked forward to one text message each day more than any other: the Daily Puzzle text from my grandmother.

How’s Life and Math?

My phone buzzed for the tenth time in less than a minute. My Grandma learned what a group chat was, and made one for the entire family. When thinking about what to post on this blog, I considered the name of this website for inspiration. Using the power of group text I decided to ask them that question. Here is what they said when asked “How’s Life? How’s Math?”

Good

My Brother Alex

A man of few words, Alex managed to answer both questions with a single word. Impressive work.

Math in the Media

While we’re at it, here’s another prompt we wanted to start off with: tracking mentions of math found in news and other media outside the classroom. As I referenced in an earlier post, this pandemic has thrust lots of statistics, charts, graphs, and calculations into the public eye. If you see any interesting articles, graphics, etc. related to math, go ahead and post a short description with a link and/or screenshot under the tag “Math in the Media.”

I’ll get the ball rolling with an interesting article I saw today on one result of the worldwide lockdowns that I hadn’t previously considered.

Socially Distant Activities

With so many people discovering new hobbies or rediscovering old ones in the midst of this pandemic, Sarah and I thought a great first prompt for this blog would be #sociallydistantactivities. Just make a quick post about any activity you or someone you know has taken up while stuck at home and throw on the “Socially Distant Activities” tag under the “Tags” menu.

Here’s an example of my own isolation-induced pursuit: the other day, inspired by boredom, nostalgia, and a log cabin-like house I passed on my run, I broke out my childhood Lincoln Logs and started building a village.Hopefully, with a couple more months of social distancing, I can craft a Lincoln Log metropolis, though I suspect I’ll run out of logs first.

COVID-19 Cooking Adventures

I love to cook. Ever since I was little, I have loved food. While most parents struggled to get their children to try anything aside from chicken nuggets, I happily tried new foods every day. When my dad became interested in bread-making and asked me to help him braid the Challahs that he had made, I quickly figured out that as much as I loved eating, I loved cooking even more.

One of my favorite desserts – an ale based chocolate cake with raspberry filling!

Welcome Back

Good evening, everyone! I don’t know about you, but my day was extremely eventful. At 8:30 sharp this morning, I was thrust back into some semblance of normality courtesy of my first Zoom class. Today, for me, marks the return of a loose daily structure after two weeks of none at all. Thanks to the helpful planner Ms. Michalski sent out, I even threw together a hastily-highlighted schedule for my first few days of online classes:

My masterfully color-coded schedule for the next three days

Extraordinary

The Williston faculty is extraordinary. Yesterday morning we joined together in our first virtual meeting of the year and it was full of energy, enthusiasm and hope. We are realistic about what we’re experiencing and what’s to come, but we haven’t changed an iota of who and what are (amazing) or our focus (our students).

The Williston full faculty in action!
